Posted March 14, Since there's a major upgrade for Wasteland 2 coming up in a few months, I was thinking of going through the first game to familiarize myself a bit more with the universe, but before, I had a few questions.
Or should I create my own characters? If so, how should I create them? I couldn't find an FAQ that wasn't convoluted and confusing. Can I find them somewhere since this is a keyboard only game? Just in case? I think that means I should do some level grinding at the beginning, but at the same time, ammo is very limited.
The game is set in , following a nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. Parts of Earth have been turned into a "wasteland" where survival is the paramount objective.
Players control a party of Desert Rangers , a paramilitary group based in the deserts of the Southwestern U. The party begins with four characters , and through the course of the game can hold as many as seven characters by recruiting certain citizens and creatures of the wasteland to the player's cause.
Throughout the game, the player explores the remaining enclaves of human civilization, including a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas. The game mechanics were based directly on those used in the role-playing games Tunnels and Trolls and Mercenaries, Spies and Private Eyes created by St.
Andre and Stackpole. Characters in Wasteland consequently have various statistics strength , intelligence and luck among others that allow them to use different skills and weapons.
Experience is gained through battle and through use of skills. The game would generally let players advance with a variety of tactics: to get through a locked gate, a player could use his Picklock skill , his Climb skill , or his Strength attribute; or he could force the gate with a crowbar - or a LAW rocket. Wasteland was one of the first RPGs in which all the characters in the party were not mere puppets for the player to control.
The initial band of Desert Rangers encountered a number of NPCs as the game progressed who could be recruited into the party. Unlike those of other computer RPGs of the time, these NPCs might temporarily refuse to give up an item or perform an action if ordered to do so. The game was also one of the first games featuring a persistent world. Changes to the game world were stored and kept. Returning to areas later in the game, one would find them in the state one left them in, instead of being reset to their original state, as was common for games of the time.
Since harddrives were still rare in homecomputers in , this meant the original game discs had to be copied first, as the manual instructed one to do. One of the other features of this game was the inclusion of a printed collection of paragraphs which the game would instruct the player to read at the appropriate times.
These paragraphs described encounters and conversations, contained clues, and added to the overall texture of the game. Your friends. Friends list is currently empty. Connect with friends. Seriously, since so many people around the world love to play this game, I must be missing something. For example, it took me a few hours to get the hang of Ultima I, but after reading the manuals and FAQ's online I was ready to go and enjoyed Ultima very much.
So I've spent a few hours reading the following before attempting to play Wasteland. I backed up my save game folder so I could do some trial-and-error until I figured out the mechanics of how to play the game. Once that was done I restored my save game folder and ventured forth. But I'm still somewhat confused by how the game operates, and I find the game so punishingly hard that it's totally unenjoyable. An example of where I find the game mechanics confusing is at High Pool.
I found the kid at the bottom left corner. The game asks me if I want to talk to the kid, so I say Yes. Then it asks "About what? What the hell??!! How am I supposed to know what to talk about?? I try randomly choosing topics and all I get is "I dunno". Sure I can bounce out to a walkthrough to find out what to talk about, but I prefer to use walkthroughs only as a last resort. Or is some other mechanic used? So I traverse every single square of High Tower and all I find is the guy selling stuff.
So I leave. Rope, Match, etc. So I'm afraid to sell anything. Don't remember the name of the place, but as soon as I enter, the game directs me to read paragraph So I bounce out and read paragraph 56 to learn there's some varmits giving these guys trouble. I say I want to help, and then I'm "teleported" or something to some different location what the hell??
So I start moving around the new location looking for the varmits. I hit a spot where it says there are desert lizards 22 feet away and it asks what I want to do. I opt to Attack. I try attacking a few rounds using pistols, but decide I want to get away since my team is taking more damage than I'd like.
So I try Running. Which is useless. My team runs. Lizards follow and keep attacking.
